POLITENESS TRAINING FOR STAFF (RESTAURANTS/BARS/CAFES)
topic: Talking to customers in English 10

Part of providing good customer service is knowing the right way to communicate. English has its own "accepted" ways of talking to customers/clients/guests. If you don't use these, or if you use them incorrectly, you might come across ( = be seen) as rude or unprofessional. In the exercise below, pretend that someone is asking you the question in italics. Choose the best, most polite response:

1. Do you have plant-based milk?
  No, unfortunately we don't.
  No, anything else?
  No, I can't help you.

2. Can I leave a tip on the machine?
No, it doesn't give you that option.
  No, you can't.
  No, just pay me.

3. Can I get an extra fork for my girlfriend?
Wait and I will bring it.
I already gave you two forks. What happened?
  Sure, no problem.

4. Is this vegan?
It says so in the menu, doesn't it?
  Yes it is.
Of course, why wouldn't it be?

5. Can I get milk with my coffee?
Milk? With this type of coffee?
Are you sure you want milk?
Yes, how much would you like?

6. Is that table taken?
  Yes it is.
  Someone is sitting there.
Yes, you can see the jacket on the chair, can't you?

7. I ordered sparking water. This is still water.
Oh, ok, sorry, I'll get that for you.
Fine. Let me get it for you.
I heard you say "still water".

8. Is this the end of the line?
  Yes, stand there.
Yes, you can see the people standing there.
  Yes, right there.

9. Do I pay here?
  Where else?
  Yes, there's no other place.
Yes, how would you like to pay?

10. Is that a loyalty card?
  Yes, would you like one?
  Yes, use it.
  Yes, do you want it?
